About Some Common Sexually Transmitted Infections...

Chlamydia infections, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, are very common. It can be treated with antibiotics. Despite being easy to treat, the prevalence of chlamydia is high because most people with an infection have no symptoms and do not seek treatment, according to the NCDC.
Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Syphilis is divided into stages (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). The number of primary and secondary syphilis cases—the most infectious stages of syphilis—is on the rise, with a greater than 9% increase in reported cases in men, and 34% in women in 2021.
Caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted infection that can be treated with antibiotics. According to the NCDC, many people with gonorrhoea have no symptoms, which can lead to delays in seeking treatment and increases in transmission.
Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very common infection caused by a microscopic protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Most people, about 70%, who have a trichomoniasis infection (about 70%) do not develop symptoms.
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus spread via exposure to bodily fluids, such as sexual intercourse or blood exposure. The virus attacks and impairs immune cells, causing progressive weakness of the immune system. HIV can progress to a condition called AIDS.
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), a blood-borne virus. Hepatitis B is more commonly transmitted through needles or blood exposure and is only rarely spread through sexual intercourse.
Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), a blood-borne virus. HCV is more commonly transmitted through needles or blood exposure and is only rarely spread through sexual intercourse.
UTIs are common infections that happen when bacteria, often from the skin or rectum, enter the urethra and infect the urinary tract. The infections can affect several parts of the urinary tract, but the most common type is a bladder infection (cystitis). Kidney infection (pyelonephritis) is another type of UTI. They’re less common, but more serious than bladder infections.
